How to assess a training design

A review of the fundamental design principles for an effective skills training programme

How do you assess a training design? What makes one skills programme outstanding while another is mediocre?  One thing we all know, is if a skills development project doesn’t reach its potential, it can be a huge drain on resources and that’s a heavy responsibility for those leading the initiative.

In our experience any programme which can meet eight or more of the following criteria has a high chance of bringing about a significant and last improvement in skills performance.

  1. Valid success model
  2. Emphasis on basic behaviour/skills
  3. Low threat learning environment
  4. Appropriate use of technology
  5. Incremental building of skills
  6. Learner centred approach
  7. Frequent and objective programme checks
  8. Maximum practice opportunity
  9. Specific performance models and examples
  10. Exciting to teach and to learn
  11. Work-based reinforcement.

In this paper we examine each of these principles in turn and highlight the cumulative impact they can have when implemented as a cohesive model.
